ACCOLADES

  • 2025 American Fine Wine Competition, Double Gold, 94 Points
  • San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, Best of Class, Vermentino

The 2023 Vermentino was awarded Best of Class at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, the largest competition of North American Wines.

For each San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, longtime wine writer Mike Dunne tastes and jots notes on the best-of-class wines. For the competition in 2025, Mike first tasted each of the 150 best-of-class wines and then trimmed this wide field to those most notable entries of the 55 wines that went into the concluding sweepstakes round. Here is what he said about the 2023 Castello di Amorosa Vermentino:

"This is why Vermentino is grabbing the attention of California vintners: At its best, as here, Vermentino can be a white wine of thrust and kick, exceptionally beckoning in its floral aroma and exceptionally compelling on the palate for its suggestions of grapefruit and peach. Order a bottle when seared scallops are on the menu."

  • Rich Cook, Wine Review Online, 92 Points

"I think I sense perhaps a dollop of Riesling in this, based on a perception of a little petrol note in this tasty Vermentino, with the main grape sourced from Temecula Valley, which is well south of the Castello but is a top performer there. This is a natural addition to the Cal-Ital portfolio. Sassy acidity focuses this on lemon, lemon and more lemon, with soft herb notes adding interest. It needs food – I would start on the fish side of the menu."

Vineyard Notes
Temecula Valley has long been known for its fertile soil, which is often referred to as "rich dirt." The primary soil type found in the Temecula Valley is a sandy loam soil. Sandy loam soils consist of a mixture of sand, silt, and clay particles, offering good drainage while retaining some moisture. The rich dirt soil of the Temecula Valley is highly suitable for vineyard cultivation. This well-draining soil helps prevent excess water accumulation around the grapevines' roots, reducing the risk of rot and disease.
Production Notes
Harvest kicked off in early August, with the typical gap between the white and red varietal maturation being almost nonexistent. This frenzied tempo continued until the rains provided our team a much-needed break. Following the rain, grapes left to hang through October enjoyed mild weather days that allowed us to wait for perfect ripeness. Our white wines from this harvest have shown perfect acidity and freshness with remarkable flavors and textures. Red wines are displaying excellent structure with deep red colors, luxurious tannins, and exquisite fruit- forward aromatics. We believe the unique weather events that defined the vintage will showcase the full range of flavors that Napa Valley wines are so well known for from crisp and vibrant to dense and powerful.
