90 POINTS - Connoisseurs Guide to California Wine

  • "If very much showing the tighter and tougher structure of its mountain origin, this very solid and somewhat gutsy youngster wants for nothing in the way of deep, well-extracted fruit, and its teasing suggestions of vanilla and forest floor auger well for certain complexity to come with time. Its still-gritty tannins warn off hasty drinking without raising any questions about its ability to age, but age it most definitely needs, and we would lobby for no fewer than five with every expectation that it will keep improving for ten."

Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
The volcanic soils of this hillside vineyard give this Cabernet Sauvignon a firm structure, with intense notes of blackcurrant, cassis and green olive. Bold yet with a supple texture and balanced tannins, this wine shows layers of ripe cherry, juicy berry flavors and cedar.

Vineyard Notes
Diamond Mountain District is one of the northern-most growing regions in Napa Valley, and is home to Castello di Amorosa. The volcanic soils and sloped landscape characteristic of the mountain limit grapevine growth leading to an especially concentrated Cabernet Sauvignon.
Winemaker Notes
Following the very small 2015 harvest, it was heartening to see the vines recover and bounce back to produce not only extremely high quality fruit but also some bounty in 2016! Harvest was earlier than expected, and we observed optimum flavor and phenolic development progress as we harvested. Across the board, acids are firm and pH is slightly lower, so the wines should be well-structured with very good aging potential. This is an exciting vintage with a lot to like! - Brooks Painter, Director of Winemaking
Food Pairing Notes
Excellent to pair with steak with cocoa and coffee rub, chicken mole, hearty mushroom dishes or grilled meats.
